Groundhog Day–He’s Got It All Backwards!

Groundhog day has been around for a long time. But his track record isn’t all that great!  In my opinion I think he has it all backwards.

The tradition says that if it’s cloudy when the groundhog emerges from his burrow he won’t see his shadow.  Because of this he stays out of the burrow which means that Spring will come early.

If it’s sunny out when he emerges he’ll see his shadow and out of fear retreats back into his burrow. That’s his way of predicting the winter will continue for six more weeks.

Now, I understand that while his shadow may scare him he really has it all backwards.  I know when it’s sunny outside I love to feel the warmth of it even if the temperature is cold. A sunny day has a way of brightening my mood.

Maybe groundhogs are just paranoid animals and not like us humans. Okay, maybe some of us are paranoid but personally I’m happy to dance with my shadow.  At least I know I’m not dancing alone.

Groundhogs are not only paranoid they are not very good predictors of the weather. I checked out the National Centers for Environmental Information. Interesting and fun info about the groundhog’s credibility.

Oh well, whether there is an early Spring or six more weeks of Winter we have to make the most of it.

If you live in a climate that is warm year round I’m a little envious right now. I’m not a winter person. I did enjoy the warmer weather earlier this week. The high on Monday was in the low 70’s here (St. Louis, MO). This is what it looks like today (Thursday).

We may not be able to control the weather but we can control our homes and lives. With the snowy weather outside it’s a good day to do some decluttering!

Have fun on Groundhog Day.

To a lighter load along the way.
